Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to outline shapes and structures under the skin. Just like the sonar used by submarines it sends out pulses of sounds and measures the time for the echo to return. By integrating this information it can map out and differentiate bone, muscle, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. X-rays and even MRI often cannot do this as well as ultrasound. Furthermore ultrasound can do this in real time, so the operator can watch the movement of, for instance, muscles and tendons, to see if there are any abnormalities.
Real time observation is also helpful in prolotherapy. We can see joint spaces and tendons on ultrasound, but needles also reflect the ultrasound beam. So we can watch as we place a needle and see exactly where the tip goes. Thus we can ensure that every injection is placed in exactly the right spot.
